Intrigue surrounds the man she loves but she does not know if he can be trusted. And, though her people need her skills, reports that invaders from Carolana are present in the area compel her to leave the protection of the mission. Her dear friend, Maria Helena, in the company of a visiting friar, travels eastward and must be warned about the danger. Esperanza’s journey across the interior of la Florida to the Rio San Juan and north to freedom gives her hope that her people’s survival will be assured thanks to the actions of a few indomitable individuals she meets along the trail.
