Local Author Chooses E-Book Format For Timucuan Tribute

Ormond Beach, FL; April 2012—Joanne Lamond has brought the past alive in her historical fiction novel,
Daughter of the Sun: The Herbolaria’s Story . Set in 1698 la Florida, the story centers around a young Timucuan healer, Esperanza, as she tries to unite her people in a struggle for survival against Spanish authority.

“Esperanza represents the strength of the once-powerful tribe that lived in north Florida,” says Ms. Lamond. “She is mission-educated and raised as a Christian, a consequence of Spanish domination. But, she wrestles daily with the teachings of her youth and the teachings of her ancestors.”

As herbolaria to the few remaining people in her visita, the healing techniques learned at her grandfather’s side help Esperanza and her fellow travelers as they trek through the wilderness from Potano province (near present-day Gainesville) to the Rio San Juan (St. John's River) and north to an area free of Spaniards. Three disparate groups crisscross the landscape intent on their own objectives. Esperanza and the slave, Anika, hasten to warn the visiting friar’s party of the threat from British invaders and pirates abroad in the province.
Juan Francisco and his fellow Timucuan rebels seek to foment an uprising against the Spanish. And Andres, the Spanish Inquisitor, hunts a notorious infidel he has tracked to the colony. The outcome of their eventual meeting along the shores of the rio will determine the future of the Timucuan people.

The author, a native Floridian and graduate of the University of Florida and C.W. Post/L.I.U., has several published children’s stories. The historical fiction short story, “The Five Cacao Beans”, set in St. Augustine, won first prize in the Children’s Writer contest in March 2011. Daughter of the Sun: The Herbolaria’s Story is her first adult novel.

Reviews are positive.

“ …capture(s) the language and culture of a people long since forgotten… . Esperanza’s internal struggles make her a compelling character.” ~Kirkus
